Revenue System of Mughals

Mughal Economy

Revenue System

  • Akbar adopted the 'Jabti System' adopted by Shershah Suri. 1/3 of the total land production was taken as tax. In place of Jabti System, in 1569 AD, on the recommendation of 'Shihabuddin Ahmed', 'Nask' or Kanakut or Muktai System was adopted in its place.
  • Nask was a contractual arrangement. It was prevalent in Gujarat and Kathiawar. Revenue collection was delayed because it took lot of time.
  • In 1570-71 AD, on the suggestion of Todarmal, 'Kanungo' was ordered to scale the agricultural land of the empire by abolishing Nask or Kanakut. At the pargana level, the table of actual production of bigha and every crop against different types of lands was made and based on this, the amount of revenue was determined. At the time of 'Shershah' this bigha produce was called 'Re' or Rye.
  • Todarmal was given the post of the Diwan of Gujarat in 1573 AD. He measured all the agricultural land of Gujarat. Impressed by this, Akbar measured the land of the entire empire. Todarmal's reforms were implemented throughout the empire.
  • In 1580 AD Todarmal adopted the 'Ain-e- dahsala' system. This Dahsala System was developed from Jabti. It was called "Todarmal Bandobast or Bandobast Aarji or Jabti".
